I SWEAR TO GOD/我对天发誓

[2021]

I SWEAR TO GOD/我对天发誓 is an exploration on the interdependency between people and religion, and aims to provoke contemplation on the role of religion in one’s life, to question the origins of our prejudices and dispositions. Designed as additions to the polytheistic Taoist pantheon, the series of deities explore the necessity and relevance of religious narratives. The origin stories that incorporate elements/issues of modern life and the absurd prompts reflection on the purpose and future of religion in today’s society.

A twist on traditional pristine looking effigies, they are imbibed with materials and physical meaning. Their unconventional appearance raises doubts of their validity and efficacy as religious objects. Where do we draw the line between a ‘religious object’ and ‘object’? What is the relationship between images and the meanings we attach to them?

With the act of praying turned into a (literal) reflection, we are faced with the fact that we are in control of our lives, and thus ought to find the balance between control and liberation, religion and ourselves.
